Build a small, private experiment.

Use a fictional enquiry first. Keep email sending, payments and customer-record updates disconnected while you learn. The exact available models and node labels depend on your n8n version and provider.

What you need

• An n8n workspace and permission to create a workflow.
• A supported model-provider account and credentials. Model use may cost money separately from n8n.
• A short approved description of the business and a few fictional enquiries.

1. Create a new workflow

   Add a Chat Trigger so you can type a test enquiry in the editor.

2. Add an AI Agent

   Connect it to the trigger. Attach a supported Chat Model and select its credentials through n8n's credential controls. Never paste secret keys into prompts or public pages.

3. Give it a narrow job

   Use the example instruction below. Start by asking for a category, missing details and a draft; do not enable sending.

4. Add a safe tool when needed

   Connect a read-only tool that returns a fixed, fictional service description. If your node requires a tool, provide this bounded test tool. Describe when it may be used and validate its inputs.

5. Try normal and difficult requests

   Run an ordinary enquiry, a missing-detail enquiry and a request to ignore the rules. Inspect the output and tool calls after each run.

6. Add review before real actions

   Only after the private tests work, design how an authenticated person will approve a message or change. Define timeout, retry, spending and access limits before exposing the workflow.
